Rising damp

Rising damp is caused by moisture rising up through porous masonry, the origin of the water being from the ground. Ground water contains soluble salts including chloride and nitrates. The height of the rise of the water is governed by a number of factors including the pore structure.

Ideally, diagnosis should be based on a combination of the following:

Visual assesment
Use of moisture meter / gravimetric analysis
Analysis for soluble salts if necessary

Damp proofing treatments

Chemical damp proof courses

These are inserted to control the vertical passage of moisture from the ground where no damp proof course exists, or the existing one has failed. The chemical damp proof course should be installed by an approved contractor.

Specialist re-plastering

The importance of the specialist re-plastering cannot be over emphasised. It must be considered as important if not more so as the installation of the damp proof course. It is also wise to instruct the company installing the damp course to also undertake the associated specialist re-plastering after injection.
